Ten Easy Skincare Resolutions to Make This Year For Better Skin

2020 marks the start of not only a new year, but a new decade, and the perfect time to reset your intentions. Chances are you’ve already committed to eating healthier or working out more, but what about your skincare habits? Even though we know the rules, we’re all guilty of picking at a pimple or forgetting the sunscreen once in awhile.

Make 2020 the year you kick those less than desirable skincare habits (sleeping in your makeup, anyone?!) to the curb and set your sights on healthier skin. In the spirit of the new year, we’ve come up with a list of ten easy skincare resolutions to help you bring in the decade with gorgeous, glowing skin.

1. Stay hydrated from the inside

Drinking water is great for your overall health, but it's especially great for your skin. Staying hydrated keeps your skin looking dewy and plump, and also helps to flush the toxins in your body more efficiently --  resulting in a healthy glow. This study published in the Journal of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology supports the beauty-boosting skin benefits of drinking plenty of water.

2. Get better sleep

It’s not a coincidence that you’ve probably heard the term "beauty sleep." Your skin repairs itself while you sleep, so getting in enough of it gives your skin the time it needs to rejuvenate (and literally make itself more beautiful).

TheNational Sleep Foundationrecommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night for most adults. Less than that can play a role in the development of wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark circles under the eyes.

3. Always take your makeup off before bed

It’s tempting to to pass out at the end of a long day before properly removing your makeup, but this is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. Sleeping in your makeup leads to clogged pores, breakouts, and even infections. Keep a bottle of micellar water and some cotton pads in your nightstand so you can keep this resolution no matter how tired you are before bed.

4. Use sunscreen every single day

Regardless of the season, temperature, or weather, applying SPF anytime you go outside is an absolute must. Not only does wearing sunscreen decrease your risk of skin cancer, but it helps slow down the visible signs of aging. Keep a mineral sunscreen spray near your morning skin care routine so you don’t forget to use it.

5. Don’t pick at your pimples

Resist the urge to pop or pick at those blemishes and breakouts. Instead, use an extractor tool or see a dermatologist. Taking care of a zit the right way will heal it faster and leave less of a chance it will scar.

6. Wash your makeup brushes

This is maybe the most overlooked rule of skincare, but washing your makeup brushes regularly can, and will, help to prevent break-outs and other skin issues and concerns.

7. Don’t skip a night cream

If you’re not already using a night cream, resolve to doing so in 2020. Using a night cream infused with powerful antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients like squalane, will help to minimize those stubborn fine lines and brighten your complexion while you sleep.

8. Mask weekly

Commit to using a face mask at least once a week. Masking not only wakes up dull, tired skin, but it gives you 15-minutes of me-time while it’s on. Use the time your mask is working its magic to de-stress your mind with a mindfulness exercise.

9. Get a humidifier

Whether your skin is dry, oily, or combination, a lot of issues can be resolved by keeping your skin hydrated. An easy way to do this is with a humidifier. Keep one in your bedroom, and let it run while you sleep to keep your skin looking and feeling happy.

10. Step up your body skincare routine

By now you're probably used to using several different products on your face. But are you neglecting your body? Your neck and chest are equally as prone to the signs of aging as your face, and your elbows, knees, hands, and feet are subject to the uncomfortable. symptoms of dryness. This year, make it a priority to care for the skin on your body as much as you care for the skin on your face. You should be cleansing with a gentle body wash, exfoliating, and also moisturizing your body with a body butter or body balm -- the same way you do your face.

Upgrade your skincare routine for the new year, and stick to these ten easy resolutions fora clearer, brighter, and all-around healthier complexion in 2020.
